CHICAGO – Health law and litigation attorney, Michael V. Favia, is the recipient of the President’s Award from the Justinian Society of Lawyers in Chicago on September 10 at the Palmer House Hilton. Favia, a past president of the Justinian Society of Lawyers, will receive the award from current president, Anita M. DeCarlo at the Justinian Society of Lawyers 2014 Installation and Awards Dinner. Also receiving awards are attorney, Leonard F. Amari, also a Justinian past president, receiving the Moses W. Harrison II Award, and Monsignor Kenneth Velo of the Archdiocese of Chicago, receiving the Award of Excellence. Favia is receiving the President’s Award for his more than 30 years of active involvement, mentorship and leadership in the Justinians and other bar associations and organizations in the Chicago legal community and numerous charitable and health organizations.

The Justinian Society of Lawyers, originally named the Justinian Society of Advocates, was formed in October 17, 1921, when all but 10 of the approximately 40 Chicago lawyers of Italian descent, who, bound by professional and ethnic ties and conscious of their heritage. Today there are approximately 1,500 Justinians serving the legal community by working directly with newly licensed Illinois attorneys. The mission statement of the Justinian Society of Lawyers is: to foster a spirit of collegiality through social and professional events, to promote the professionalism of its members, and to participate in civic and community affairs so as to ensure the enduring respect of the legal system.

Attorney Favia recently commented on being the named recipient of the Justinian President’s Award, “I am happy to do my part, along with the rest of the group, and try to be a good leader and role model in the community. I remember being a young lawyer invited to Justinian events and dinners where I learned so much from the elder members who were so good at showing me the ropes and being good mentors. I just try to do the right thing and give back to this group that has given me so much over the years.”

President DeCarlo’s theme for awards and recognition this year is gratitude. The mentoring she received from many Justinians she compares to that of a family offering guidance with nothing expected in return. In a recent statement for Fra Noi, a popular publication in the Italian-American community in Chicago, DeCarlo praised mentoring, “It reminds me that as we are learning, we are simultaneously teaching. It is the cornerstone of why we ‘practice’ law,” she said.

The recent Fra Noi article, Justinian Society of Lawyers 2014 Installation and Awards Dinner, highlights all the 2014 award recipients and their contributions to their communities, colleagues and the practice of law in the Chicago area. Attorney Favia is proud of the entire group and said he is looking forward to the new 2014 Installation and Awards Dinner.
